The Magic Flute never goes out of favour, but it's never out of date either, with its profound insights, wrapped in the most delectable music. And directed by David McVicar at the Royal Opera House it's hard to find a better production. No wonder it will reach its 350th performance during this run. Unashamedly beautiful designs by John Macfarlane, ravishingly lit by Paule Constable, reflect.
Children play a significant part in this fetching and inventive English-language production of Mozart’s classic Singspiel. They uphold an old tradition which includes, for example, Ingmar Bergman’s close-up shots of a child’s face in the audience in his 1975 film, and are part of a constant supply of recruits from Opera North’s thriving children’s chorus.

This specially-devised opera is a wonderful introduction for school children, and teachers alike. Sung in English, this shortened version of The Magic Flute will be accompanied with a free teachers’ cross curricular resource pack (available from January 2019).
The Magic Flute is a singspiel, which is a form of German light opera. This means that, unlike most opera, The Magic Flute contains sections of spoken German dialogue in between the arias instead of the sung recitative which is usually used to propel the story in an opera. Our production will feature surtitles above and to the side of the stage.
Triumph! Welcome Welcome to to our final production of the spring 2019 season, Mozart’s exuberant The Magic Flute. I have an experience of it that is shared by a huge number of opera lovers: it.
